Shoplifting at Greenwich Shopping Park

I had a strange experience at Greenwich Shopping Park today. I popped over to do a bit of pre-holiday shopping (and left empty handed for the first time since I can remember). But it was the conversation I overheard walking past some of the security that suprised me.

Shoplifting is still stealing.
Two young pretty girls, were quite candidly talking about shoplifting with the security. Apparently shoplifting "doesn't hurt anyone because it's not like we're stealing from an actual person." A curious point of view.
"The people in the shops still get paid. They might get a big of a telling off, but we're not doing anything wrong."
But it wasn't the girls the surprised me. It was the security guards who didn't do anything. Who instead of calling the police, reporting this, and doing their job, they had a chat about it. Surely part of their job is to cut down crime in the area? To make sure that it's a safer, happier place to shop? I'd rather they took a sterner view to shoplifting. Or to the guy selling pirate DVDs outside the shops.
I really hope the attitude to shop lifting in the area changes.

I think what shocked me was the flippancy. I got the impression that this was a pretty regular occurrence from these girls - like they'd be seen around the area quite frequently. It wasn't just a chat in passing.

ReportI've worked in retail and believe me, the staff know full well that it does hurt real people. But, two things to say about this.
First off, how do you know the security guards didn't do anything? In my experience all the security guards in different shops talk to each other and share descriptions. Sometimes they will follow people into other shops without them realising.
Secondly, just because someone discusses shoplifting, doesn't mean you can do anything. You can't even do anything if someone puts something in, say, the top of a pram. You have to wait until they leave the premises.
The security guards should have said something. But calling the police? Really? You think they arrest people for having a conversation? You have to have proof or be a witness.
Unless they had actually caught these girls shoplifting, in which case, they should've.
