More than 60 graduates looking to gain a vital advantage in the job market have started intensive training on a new internship scheme at the University of Greenwich.
The Graduate Internship Programme, launched this autumn, is matching recent Greenwich graduates who have not yet embarked on their careers with an employer for a four-week, full-time internship.
The jobs on offer are at graduate level and include opportunities to work on short projects in, for example, market research, marketing, social media, strategy and data analysis.
Before starting their internships next January, all graduates on the scheme are taking part in a series of day-long training events at the university. Run by experts in the university's Business School, the sessions cover presentation, communication and business skills, to prepare graduates for their roles and make sure that both parties get the most out of the placement.
The programme, open to all Greenwich graduates, is being run in partnership with small and medium-sized businesses from the IT, software, security, training and voluntary sectors.
Jerry Allen from the university's Business School, who is leading the Graduate Internship scheme, says firms will soon be seeing the benefit of a major graduate skills boost in the workplace. "We know this scheme has been in big demand among employers," he says. "We are not simply providing graduates, but young men and women who will be able to make an immediate impact in the company they are assigned to.
"Training has covered many different aspects of the business world including presentation techniques, body language and how to speak with confidence to employers. We expect our graduates to have the social and professional skills to complement their other knowledge, and to prove extremely valuable to their new workplaces."
Mr Allen adds: "In a highly competitive job market, the experience of a high-quality internship will enhance our graduates' CVs and make them stand out from the crowd."
